Danish kings have always used sculptures to display their power.
Among cobblestones and massive timber beams, approximately 300 sculptures are on display. Take a guided tour in Christian IV's brewhouse - also known as the Lapidarium of Kings - and hear the stories about the kings' grand projects, and how the sculptures have been used for both oppression and exaltation.

The Lapidarium of Kings

1.

A Sculptural Sanctuary

60 Norwegians, three horses, and two Danish kings equipped like a Roman emperor. These are some of the many sculptures you will come face to face with on this tour. Throughout history, kings have used sculptures to stage themselves, on facades, in urban spaces, and in gardens – among the subjects – both high and low were to regard their sovereign in exalted majesty.
Christian IV's Brewery

From Bastion to Brewery

The brewery's long history begins at the start of the 17th century, when Christian IV constructs a bastion to protect the capital from enemy fire. Just eight years later, the bastion is converted into a brewery that can produce beer for the navy's many thirsty soldiers. In 1767, a fire puts an end to the brewing operations. The building is thereafter used for storage and later for the exhibition of royal sculptures, what we today know as the King's Lapidarium.
